Treating Glaucoma Through Surgery

cataracts

The health of ones eyes is extremely important, yet many people don’t have regular eye exams. Because of this, glaucoma affects so many people and causes blindness; it is the leading cause, yet glaucoma is treatable if caught as soon as starts. Surgery to treat glaucoma is done when all else has failed.

Glaucoma is a term that doctors have given to four eye diseases. What the four types of glaucoma have in common is how they destroy vision. Glaucoma occurs when the optic nerve becomes destroyed due to pressure or lack of blood supply. Doctors are not sure exactly why this happens in some people and not in others. The people at highest risk of glaucoma are black people, people over 40, and anyone with a history of the disease in their family. Doctors will first try to treat glaucoma with medications, but if this doesn’t work then a surgical procedure is the last option. There are two types of operations that can be performed to treat glaucoma; traditional and laser.

Glaucoma is treated with surgery when all other options have failed. Cutting into one of the eyes, whether with a laser or scalpel, can be very risky. Laser trabeculoplasty is the most common operation and it is used for open-angle glaucoma, which is the most common type. This operation is done by using a laser to make tiny holes in the drainage channels of the eye to help with fluid drainage. Trabeculectomy is done traditionally with a scalpel and the surgeon cuts a tiny hole in the white part of the eye. Drain implantation is when the doctor puts a small plastic tube inside of the eye to help relieve the pressure and the drainage. Cyclophotocoagulation is the “last resort” surgical procedure because it can cause a loss of vision. In this operation, a surgeon uses a laser on the surface of the eyeball to target the fluid producing parts.

Having surgery for glaucoma is not something that anybody wants to have to go through. The good news is that if a person takes care of their eye health and gets regular exams, then there is a chance they might never have to have a glaucoma operation. Taking care of yourself is always the smartest thing to do.

Eyecare Advice

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Most people take their eyesight for granted. They mistakenly believe that they will have healthy, normal vision for years to come. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The real truth is that poor vision and eye diseases can hit at any age. There are so many things that can affect your vision. That is why eyecare visits to an eye care center are absolutely necessary at any age of life. You may get lucky and only have minor vision trouble but there is always the chance for something worse.

An eye examination is pretty simple. Eye doctors will check for any number of conditions. One of the primary reasons why people seek out eye examinations is because they are having trouble seeing things at a distance or close up. If you are having trouble seeing, then it may be a case of hyperopia (farsightedness) or myopia (nearsightedness). Myopia means that you can see things close up but have trouble seeing things that are far away. Hyperopia is the exact opposite. You can see things far away but cannot see things close up.

Optical eye care professionals also look for certain conditions, such as glaucoma, astigmatism, cataracts and conjunctivitis. Glaucoma is when there is a rise in the intraocular eye pressure. It is a condition that can lead to blindness if not taken care of swiftly. This is a hereditary disease that necessitates eyecare surgery to correct the problem. Glaucoma treatment usually begins with monitoring the pressure in the eyes. Some people are born with glaucoma and it must be continuously checked through life.

Astigmatism is when the cornea is oval shaped instead of its natural round shape, yet it is generally not a major condition. Many people have this problem and must wear special glasses or contact lenses to correct it. Cataracts are definitely a problem. Cataracts occur when the lenses become cloudy and an eye doctor will have to operate to remove the cloudy material. This condition is fairly common in the elderly.

Next on the list of conditions is conjunctivitis. This is a condition where there is an infection of the conjunctiva. Many people know this condition as “pink eye.” It can be treated by your family care physician or it can be treated by eye doctors. The usual method of curing this condition is to provide drops that will clear the infection. It should be noted that conjunctivitis is extremely transmittable.

There are many things that can happen to your eyes. The few conditions listed above are just some of many diseases that can afflict them. Even something as simple as dirt can ruin your vision. Take care of your eyesight by getting routine eyecare examinations performed. Your eyes will thank your for it.

It is easy to forget about your eye care needs. Even if you wear prescription lenses, it is easy to forget to schedule a yearly visit to an optometrist. Most people cannot afford to go to the eye doctor every year. The economy is forcing a lot of cutbacks in how people spend their hard earned money. If you wear contacts then you know how expensive they can be but have you tried shopping for your contacts online?
